The case of the $287 shoe

Published On July 18, 2012 | By Arielle Aronson

Men often complain about women’s shoe collections, but when it comes to sports memorabilia, shoes can become the same pricy indulgence for men that they sometimes are for women.

Take, for example, the latest athlete model shoe to hit the shelves: the Zoom Vapor Roger Federer 287 produced by Nike. The black-and-gold sneaker sold for $287 in order to commemorate tennis star Roger Federer‘s record 287 weeks as world No. 1 on the tennis circuit. The shoes are only available in sizes 9, 10, 11 and 12, and just 287 pairs of the shoe were made. Nike ran out of shoes within minutes of putting them up for sale online.

The shoe is $37 more expensive than the newest LeBron James shoe on the market, the LeBron 9 PS Elite, which is listed at $250 on the Nike website. Nike also designs tennis star Rafael Nadal‘s shoes, but his model is a bargain compared to LeBron and Federer, running at $130 per pair.

For those who missed the Federer shoe sale on the Nike website, do not fret: the shoe is already available on eBay for an bargain bid of $2000 to $4000.
