Pistorius runs into trouble with the law

Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius seems to have been running more than just races; this time he has run into trouble with the law.

Pistorius will reportedly be charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, by the South African police. Nothing is certain yet as an investigation is ongoing, but Pistorius is the lone suspect thus far according to the South African media.

Steenkamp was reportedly found dead at Pistorius’ home with bullet wounds in her arm and head. A 9mm pistol was also recovered at the scene of the crime. The South African police force has been quiet to the media, however they have leaked some info that they have no other current suspects and that Pistorius has had a record of domestic violence in the past. Early reports said Pistorius mistook Steenkamp for a burglar and shot her by mistake, but the police said they are not the source of that report.

Pistorius made history by being the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics. He is commonly known as “Blade Runner” due to his carbon fiber prosthetic legs and has served as a symbol of inspiration for athletes and non-athletes alike. He is a celebrity in South Africa and was even labeled in Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential men in 2012.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee released a short statement Thursday regarding the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the respective families at this time,” the organization said, in a statement.
