Coach K Staying on with U.S.A. Basketball

In a twist of events, Duke Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski will remain the head coach of the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team.

Krzyzewski originally planned to step down after winning gold in London last summer. USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo held off discussions about Coach K’s future until the collegiate season ended. Coach K will hold a press conference tomorrow at Duke to announce his return.

Coach K took over Team USA in 2005 after a disappointing bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. He returned the team to prominence with gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and the 2010 FIBA world championship.

Team USA’s next assignment is the newly renamed World Cup of Basketball in Spain. A victory in this tournament would guarantee a spot in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The anonymous source that broke the story said that Krzyzewski plans to make changes to his current coaching staff, which includes NBA coaches Mike D’Antoni and Nate McMillan and Syracuse University head coach Jim Boeheim.
