‘Unprecedented’ penalties against Penn State to be announced Monday
CBS News is reporting that the NCAA will impose “unprecedented” penalties against Penn State University and the Penn State football team in the wake of a child sex abuse scandal that has rocked the reputation of the school and its highest officials. NCAA president Mark Emmert will announce the penalties at 9 a.m. on Monday morning. CBS cites a high-ranking association official as the source of the report.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” the source reportedly told CBS correspondent Armen Keteyian.
The punishments follow former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky‘s conviction on 45 criminal counts related to child sex abuse and a scathing report from former FBI Director Louis Freeh, whose independent investigation into the matter concluded that the highest ranking officials at Penn State both knew of Sandusky’s actions and did nothing to stop him.
On Sunday morning, a statue of former head coach Joe Paterno was removed from the Penn State campus. The statue was erected in 2001, months after Paterno reportedly learned from a graduate assistant that Sandusky was molesting a young boy in the Penn State football facility.
