Marino’s squeaky-clean image takes a hit

Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino is scheduled to host CBS’s Super Bowl pregame show Sunday, and it looks like he will have plenty of attention on him. On Thursday, the New York Post revealed Marino had an extramarital affair through which he fathered a child in 2005.

Marino has long been known in the NFL as a good guy, a man who never makes the papers for negative reasons and a devoted father of six in a secure relationship with his wife of 28 years. The Post revelations shatter this image, as the paper reported that Marino paid his mistress millions of dollars in exchange for her secrecy and to support the daughter he fathered through the affair.

Marino met the woman when she was a 35-year-old production assistant at CBS Sports and he was an analyst.

In a letter to the Post, Marino admitted to the affair, saying, “This is a personal and private matter. I take full responsibility both personally and financially for my actions now as I did then. We mutually agreed to keep our arrangement private to protect all parties involved.”

Marino added that he will remain married to wife Claire. It is unknown when she found out about the affair.

According to the Post, Marino and his mistress initially agreed to a deal in which Marino paid the mistress millions of dollars and in exchange she would move to Texas, where she would raise their daughter. The woman did not remain in Texas long, however, and she moved to Manhattan’s exclusive Upper West Side and also became a socialite in the Hamptons.

The mistress is now married to another man with whom she has a son. Marino is reportedly in contact with his now-7-year-old daughter.
