Bruins fall 4-3 in shootout loss
Final Score: Boston Bruins 3, New York Rangers 4 (Shootout)
Twice this season the New York Rangers have blown multi-goal leads to the Boston Bruins, and twice, the Rangers have been lucky to come away with a win.
The B’s had a rough start and dug themselves into a hole after allowing the Rangers to lead 3-0 halfway through the third period. However, they made quite a comeback as David Krejci made it 3-1 with 11 minutes remaining, and with a pulled goalie, Nathan Horton and Brad Marchand both scored in the final 91 seconds to send the game into overtime.
The Rangers rode shootout goals by Rick Nash and Ryan Callahan to a 4-3 victory, the team’s third straight win against the Bruins at the TD Garden, and effectively ended the Bruins’ three-game winning streak.
Highlights:
- The Bruins’ penalty kill successfully killed off a 5-on-3 for the Rangers in the third period and continue to boast the highest penalty kill percentage in the NHL with 93.5 percent kill rate.
- The B’s third period comeback featured big goals from three different skaters in the last 11 minutes to overcome a 3-0 deficit. While the outcome of game was a disappointment, the Bruins came away with one point.
Players of the Game:
David Krejci helped give the B’s the energy they needed and put them on the board nearly halfway through the third period, flipping a rebound over Lundqvist’s right pad into the back of the net. Krejci leads the team with 11 points.
Brad Marchand was one of the few Bruins who played aggressively throughout the entire game, and he scored the game-tying goal with 42.3 second to play. The goal was his seventh of the season. Marchand was also the only Bruins player to score in the shootout.
Henrik Lundqvist, goalie of the Rangers, stopped 37 shots plus three of the four attempts in the shootout to give the Rangers their fourth win in five games.
Quote of the Game:
“We dug ourselves a hole of our own doing,” said Bruins coach Claude Julien. “At the same time, you’ve got to appreciate the fact that we came back and tied the game with our goalie pulled on two occasions. That’s a positive.”
Looking Ahead:
The Bruins will travel to Buffalo and face off against the Sabres in their third match-up of the season. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m. at the First Niagara Center. The two teams met on Feb. 10 when Boston defeated Buffalo 3-1 and Jan. 31 when Boston suffered a 7-4 loss. The two teams have some bad blood between each other after last season, which will spark tough competition.
