Where is the love? Pats drop Kyle Love
The Patriots have recently released defensive tackle Kyle Love in a surprising move to many, but a closer look reveals that the decision is related to Love’s recent diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. While Love has been healthy for much of his career the Patriots still won’t risk it as they have given him the boot during the offseason.
Love was diagnosed within the past few weeks and has reportedly been dealing with the illness to the point of not being able to workout with the team. Listed at 6-1 310, Love dropped down to 280 by some accounts, but has been gaining the weight back with the help of trainers. While Love certainly is not too pleased by the news, his agent, Richard Kopelman, is astounded.
“I’m somewhat surprised,” Kopelman said. “I know the Patriots run a tight ship, but I’m a little surprised. But they were not willing to take any risk. Kyle is going to be at 100 percent within a matter of weeks. Barring something out of the ordinary, he should be ready to go for training camp, and he’ll continue to be successful.”
Love was undrafted out of Mississippi State in 2010, but made his mark in his rookie season. He played nine games as a rookie, and then 16 the past two seasons with a combined 24 starts. He has been a solid player for the Patriots and should find a team before the 2013 season.
Plenty of athletes play under the same circumstances and thrive; Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears was diagnosed in 2008 and Michael Sinclair of the Seattle Seahawks was diagnosed towards the end of his career.
