The Houston Texans have donated $100,000 to relief efforts after the destruction of Moore, Okla., in Monday’s tornado.

“It’s just a tragic event,” said Texans CEO Bob McNair Thursday. “We were watching it on television and actually an acquaintance of ours, their family lives there. Fortunately, they weren’t hurt, but their house was pretty much destroyed.

“It’s just an unbelievable situation and we just wanted to say we’re sorry that you have had this disaster, and hopefully this will help a little bit.”

McNair and his wife, Janice, on behalf of the Texans organization, made the donation to the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO) Disaster Relief in Oklahoma City. The BGCO offers hot meals, water purification, showers, laundry, debris removal, childcare and medical help to those affected by the tornado.

Other members of the sports community have stepped up to help out with relief efforts. Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant donated $1 million to the Red Cross, which was matched by the Thunder organization, the NBA and the NBPA. LA Dodgers outfielder and Oklahoma native Matt Kemp offered up $1,000 for every home run he hits before the All-Star Break, and recently added another $250,000 to that total.

In the wake of tragedy, it’s nice to see players and organizations that are idolized by many donate to relief efforts and encourage others to lend a helping hand as well. Sports already bring people together in many ways, and when they can work to serve the greater good, it makes this unity even more special.
