French Open Fashion: The Good, the Meh and the Ugly
The Good:
Maria Sharapova
Maria Sharapova generally looks nice on the tennis court, and this year’s French Open is no exception. Sharapova looked sleek and professional in this two-tone purple tennis dress, but she added a flash of flair with the neon colored straps to keep this look from appearing too boring. The 26-year-old won the French Open for the first time last year, and she cruised through her first-round match this year with a straight-sets win on her quest to repeat as women’s champion.
Sloane Stephens
Sloane Stephens is a relative newcomer to the top circles of the tennis tour, but she looked like a fashion pro in her French Open debut this year. The 20-year-old experimented with color with her tennis-yellow dress and turquoise shoes-and-shorts combo, but it all looked appropriate rather than too garish for the youthful player. Stephens has seen success at Roland Garros before as a juniors champion, and she advanced to the fourth round in the women’s division last year.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
This Frenchman is on home turf at the French Open, and he showed he knows how to dress for Roland Garros as well. Tsonga’s blueish-gray, yellow and white shirt and shorts combo is a bit of a safe choice, but the pattern on the shirt and cut of the shorts make him stand out just that little bit. Tsonga advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open last year, where he lost in five sets to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
The Meh:
Rafael Nadal
Rafa has a love of bright colors, and he doesn’t disappoint with these bright-but-tasteful coral shorts, but it’s his shirt that takes his outfit down a notch. Rafa went for a light gray top, but it’s too light and therefore just looks dingy, especially when soaked with sweat. However, the King of Clay can wear whatever he wants to Roland Garros since he’s won a record seven French Open titles and is searching for his eighth Parisian trophy this year.
Serena Williams
Something about this outfit just does not quite work for Serena. While it is certainly a better look than some of her past Grand Slam ensembles, this dark grey dress just hangs off Serena’s body and does not quite flatter her figure. There are little details to enhance the look, such as cinching at the V of her chest and the complimentary orange shorts, but Serena is a huge fashion fan, and this year’s dress just doesn’t quite hit it out of the park.
Roger Federer
Federer was boasting a touristy look at practice day for the French Open with his Nike Eiffel Tower/tennis-themed t-shirt. This outfit works fine, but it doesn’t quite say 17-time Grand Slam title winner. We’ll forgive Federer for looking like a fan on a practice day, and we’re sure the shirt will probably be for sale soon, but let’s hope he looks a bit more like the champion he is on the court.
The Ugly
Laura Robson
Laura Robson is a fit, young 19-year-old, but all this outfit does for her is make her look bigger than she is and boring. The pattern on the shirt and skirt would have looked fine had the ensemble all been in one piece, but it doesn’t work as two separate pieces. The shirt also fits Robson funny — it flares out, making her stomach look bigger, and rides up as Robson runs around, which is bound to happen constantly on a tennis court. Robson and her unfortunate outfit bowed out of the women’s singles competition Monday with a 3-6, 2-6 loss to Caroline Wozniacki.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands
Mattek-Sands is a journeywoman on the WTA tour as a 28-year-old who is known more for her fashion choices than her success on the court. Her fashion choices have been so eccentric that she has been called the “Lady Gaga” of the tennis world by some papers and was once fined for wearing a cowboy hat on the court. This ensemble is therefore rather tame for Mattek-Sands, but that doesn’t mean it works. Mattek-Sands looks more like a softball player in this outfit than a tennis star, and she needs to drop the high socks.
Venus Williams
Venus is an inspiration by continuing to compete in the WTA despite an autoimmune disorder diagnosis that causes joint pain so severe that she is often unable to practice. But while Venus’s play is inspiring, her fashion choices at the French Open this year are not. Venus is tall and thin and does not have many curves to display, but she only emphasizes that rail-thin look with her patterned leggings underneath a patterned skirt. She looks much older than her 32 years in this outfit. Venus, like Robson, is already out of the singles tournament after a hard-fought but ultimately disappointing first-round loss.
Gael Monfils
It seems that even Monfils doesn’t know what he’s doing wearing this outfit. The 26-year-old Frenchman thrilled the crowd in his first-round win against No. 5 Tomas Berdych, but his style left the biggest impression. From the red-and-black bodysuit to the blue basketball shorts to the striped multicolor vest, we have no idea what’s going on here. Perhaps Monfils got dressed in the dark? This is, so far, the unquestionably worst outfit of the French Open in 2013.
