Chavez jokes about having World Series in Venezuela
During a televised Cabinet meeting Friday night, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez joked that with so many of his countrymen playing in this year’s World Series, the event should be played in Venezuela next year, according to NBC Sports.
With the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers having a combined nine players on their rosters, they have a record amount of Venezuelans playing in the October Classic. Chavez made the comment that when the starting lineups are put together, Venezuelans makeup one-third of the players.
“I think the next World Series, Obama, you’re going to have to play it here in Venezuela, because it’s Venezuelans all over the place,” Chavez said in reference to President Barack Obama.
Chavez also praised Pablo Sandoval for his three-home run game, and pointed out that Anibal Sanchez, another Venezuelan player, started for the Tigers on Saturday.
The list of Venezuelan players in the World Series includes Miguel Cabrera, Avisail Garcia and Omar Infante, who all play for the Tigers, as well as Marco Scutaro, Gregor Blanco, Jose Mijares and Hector Sanchez, who play for the Giants.
“What would the major leagues do if Venezuela didn’t exist?” Chavez asked. “They’d get bored.”
