Winter Classic likely to be cancelled; no talks currently scheduled
The NHL lockout seems destined to drag on, with reports on Monday indicating that representatives for the players and owners have no talks currently scheduled.
Just as disheartening for NHL fans is the expected cancellation of the league’s annual Winter Classic. The announcement will likely come at a press conference on Thursday, according to a report from ESPN’s Katie Strang.
The Winter Classic, played outdoors in a football or baseball stadium, has been played since 2008 and is the NHL’s highest-rated event of the regular season. This year’s classic was scheduled to pit the Detroit Red Wings against the Toronto Maple Leaves.
The players’ union and league last met in Toronto two weeks ago, where they exchanged proposals for revenue splits and other issues at stake in negotiations.
