Boston College Eagles

Record this season: 15-7-2
Beanpot championships: 17
Record vs. Beanpot teams this season: 2-1 vs. Northeastern, 2-1 vs. BU, they have not yet played the Harvard Crimson.
Last Beanpot won: 2012
Local kids on the team:

  • Freshman defenseman Teddy Doherty, Hopkinton
  • Freshman forward Brendan Silk, Wakefield
  • Junior forward Kevin Hayes, Dorchester
  • Sophomore forward Cam Spiro, Hingham
  • Senior forward Steven Whitney, Reading
  • Junior forward Bill Arnold, Needham
  • Sophomore goaltender Brad Barone, Medfield

Brief summary of their season this year: The Eagles are defending national champions and defending Beanpot champions. BC will look to extend its Beanpot winning streak to four consecutive seasons this year, but the road won’t be easy. The Eagles are showing signs of coming out of a January slump that peaked when they were swept at home by at-the-time last-place Maine, who hadn’t won a game at BC since 2005.

The Eagles are thin on defense after losing Patch Alber for the season with a torn meniscus and seeing freshmen defensemen Michael Matheson and Colin Sullivan miss time with injuries. The Eagles’ 4-1 win against Vermont last weekend gives them some momentum heading into the Beanpot.

Boston University Terriers

Record this season: 13-10-1
Beanpot championships: 29
Record vs. Beanpot teams this season: 1-2 vs. BC, 0-1 vs. Northeastern, and 0-1 vs. Harvard.
Last Beanpot won: 2009
Local kids on the team:

  • Junior goaltender Anthony Moccia, Medford
  • Freshman defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, Charlestown
  • Freshman forward Danny O’Regan, Needham
  • Freshman forward Mike Moran, Marshfield
  • Junior defenseman Garrett Noonan, Norfolk
  • Senior forward/defenseman Jake Moscatel, Lexington
  • Freshman forward Sam Kurker, Reading
  • Junior forward/defenseman Matt Ronan, Woburn

Brief summary of their season this year: BU has had an interesting season. Days before the start of the school year, senior forward Justin Courtnall left the team to turn pro. Then, in December, BU lost another forward when redshirt sophomore Yasin Cisse decided to leave BU to play Major Junior hockey. The most recent blow came on Friday when freshman forward Wesley Myron left the team in search of more playing time and a pro career. The three losses leave BU very thin up front, and with walk-ons Jake Moscatel and Matt Ronan already playing due to lost personnel, BU can ill afford any injuries.

The Terriers are also slumping big time at the moment, and they enter the Beanpot on the heels of a 5-1 loss at UMass-Amherst last Friday. They have plenty of motivation to win this year, however, as BU’s senior class will be looking to win its only Beanpot championship of its career. It’s been a very, very long time (since 1965) that a class at BU has graduated without winning a Beanpot.

Harvard Crimson

Record this season: 5-14-1
Beanpot championships: 10
Record vs. Beanpot teams this season: 0-1 vs. Northeastern, 1-0 vs. BU, they have not played Boston College yet.
Last Beanpot won: 1993
Local kids on the team:

  • Freshman defenseman Desmond Bergin, Natick
  • Sophomore forward Colin Blackwell, North Andover
  • Junior defenseman John Caldwell, Charlestown
  • Sophomore forward Tommy O’Regan, Needham
  • Sophomore forward Mike Seward, Winchester
  • Freshman forward Jimmy Vesey, North Reading

Brief summary of their season this year: The Crimson started the season decently by going 4-3-1 in their first eight games, but then they lost four players – including top defensemen Patrick McNally and Max Everson — to an academic scandal and have struggled mightily ever since. Harvard’s only win following the players’ expulsions came on Jan. 9 against Boston University when they topped the Terriers, 6-5, in overtime. The Crimson will have their hands full in the semifinal with a Boston College team looking for a four-peat.

Northeastern Huskies

Record this season: 7-13-3
Beanpot championships: 4
Record vs. Beanpot teams this season: 1-0 vs. Harvard, 1-2 vs. BC, 1-0 vs. BU.
Last Beanpot won: 1988
Local kids on the team:

  • Sophomore defenseman Dan Cornell, Abington
  • Junior forward Torin Snydeman, Groton
  • Junior forward Cody Ferriero, Essex
  • Senior forward Robbie Vrolyk, Boylston

Brief summary of their season this year: The Huskies have had a difficult year this far, and they currently sit in the basement of Hockey East with their 4-11-3 in conference record. Two of those wins come against fellow Hockey East and Beanpot teams BU and BC. Since Dec. 1, the Huskies are 2-6-2, but both wins come against Beanpot teams (BU and Harvard). The Huskies struggle to close out games, so even if they build up a big lead against BU early in the semifinal, stick around because you never know what will happen in a Northeastern third period.
