Ortiz, wife call it quits on nine-year marriage

On the field, it seems life could not be better for David Ortiz. The beloved DH is batting .516 with 11 RBIs in the eight games since he made his return from a pesky Achilles injury. Off the field, however, things aren’t so rosy.

Ortiz and his wife of nine years, Tiffany, have filed for divorce. Ortiz met Tiffany when he was playing for the Seattle Mariners’ Single-A team in Wisconsin, where Tiffany is from. The couple have three children together: daughters Jessica and Alexandra and son D’Angelo.

Ortiz shared the unfortunate news with WEEI.com and MLB.com in order to prevent the news from leaking from someone other than himself. He also told the outlets he would like to deal with the divorce privately and hinted that the split is amicable.

“There are some situations in life that work out for a period of time and at some point they don’t work out anymore and you have to move on,” Ortiz said. “I’m moving on. She’s moving on. Hopefully everybody respects that.”

Ortiz said he does not want anyone to connect his personal issues off the field with his performance on the field. He told WEEI and MLB.com that he knows how to separate his personal and professional life and does not expect the divorce to affect his play.

Whether or not the divorce affects his play, however, our thoughts go out to David, Tiffany and their three children as they adjust to this new phase of life.
