Jones Not Pleased with Bobsled Paycheck
Lolo Jones is trying her hand at bobsledding and finding out that it isn’t as lucrative as she thought. Jones is known for her performance on the track, having competed in the Summer Olympics in track and field as a hurdler.
She received a check from the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation for $741.84, which encompassed the entire seven month season. Jones then made a quick video on Vine, joking that she might be late with her rent this month because of the paltry amount of her check.
She said to the camera, “Seven months with bobsled season. The whole season. That’s it.” After making the rent joke, the camera focuses on the amount on the check.
“It wasn’t taken very well,” Olympic gold medalist Steven Holcomb told USA Today. “People were really kind of insulted. You just made $741, more than most athletes in the sport. So what are you complaining about?”
Holcomb added that her comments came across as snobby given the fact that she has a high profile in the athletic world and earns additional income from endorsements, calling her video a “slap in the face.” Jones is extremely well known among Olympic athletes, but her reputation in the public hasn’t always been seen in the best light.
She tried to apologize via a statement, explaining that her video wasn’t meant to insult anyone, but shed light on the disparity between track and bobsledding.
