San Francisco’s Melky Cabrera suspended 50 games after positive PED test
The San Francisco Giants’ Melky Cabrera will miss the rest of the regular season after being suspended for 50 games because of a positive for excess testosterone (which is considered a performance-enhancing substance). Cabrera, in an unusual move for players suspended for PED violations, admitted his mistake and apologized via a statement released by the MLB Players’ Association.
“My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used,” Cabrera said in the statement. “I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and I will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down.”
Before the positive test was announced, rumors had been swirling that Cabrera was guilty of PED usage because of a spike in his level of play. A writer even apologized to Cabrera after the All-Star Game for suggesting Cabrera was not playing cleanly. Before this season, the former Yankee was a career-.275 hitter. He was released from the Braves in 2010 after hitting just .255 with four home runs and 42 RBIs in 147 games. This year with the Giants, Cabrera is batting .346 with a league-leading 159 hits.
Cabrera was a key factor in the MLB All-Star Game, going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run for the National League squad and was named as the game’s MVP. Because the National League won the All-Star Game, the National League representative in the World Series will have home field advantage.
