Red Sox to interview Yankees bench coach
While some teams are playing for postseason glory, we all know the Red Sox are searching for a manager to solve their troubles. Next on the Red Sox’s list is Yankees bench coach Tony Pena, Jr, according to the Boston Herald. Pena is set to be interviewed Monday, and before everyone gets flustered because the man has worn pinstripes, it’s important to remember that Pena was also a catcher for the Red Sox.
Later this week, the Sox will sit down with Orioles’ third base coach and former Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale.
Pena is able to make the trip to Boston because it’s an off day for his Yankees in the ALCS. He managed the Royals from 2002 to 2005 and in 2003, he won AL Manager of the Year honors. In 2003 the Royals finished above .500, the first and only time they have recorded a winning season since 1994.
Since the Orioles have already been eliminated, meetings aren’t difficult for Hale, who coached under Terry Francona after Brad Mills left. Hale is also a veteran minor-league manager.
The Sox interviewed Tim Wallach on Friday, and according to ESPN he said he thought it went well. Wallach is a five-time All-Star third baseman and has interviewed for major league managing jobs twice before.
After Pena and Hale, former catcher Brad Ausmus is next on the list for the Sox. It’s yet to be determined whether any of these candidates are the right fit, but you have to think that after the 2012 season, next year really couldn’t get any worse.
