Is Rory McIlroy the new Tiger Woods?
Tiger Woods hasn’t quite been the same golfer after events in his, ahem, personal life. While he’s made a triumphant return to the game, a crop of young golfers have made an impact on the game, and among them might just be the second coming of Tiger himself, at least according to Australian golfer Adam Scott.
Scott pegged Rory McIlroy to own the game the way Woods did in the height of his career. McIlroy currently sits at No. 1 in the world rankings, with five wins this year. World No. 6 Scott told CNN McIlroy is in a league of his own in the golf world.
“He’s 23, we don’t have to see any improvement,” Scott told CNN. “He’s won two majors by eight shots, been No. 1 in the world and is starting to become a prolific winner. I think he has shown how good he is, he is the best at the moment. It is up to him how long that lasts. He has the ability to dominate fields, as Tiger did.”
As the sixth best golfer in the world, Scott is a pretty credible source when it comes to the top golfers in the game, but if you’d like to hear it from someone with a little more industry history, leave it to legend Jack Nicklaus.
Nicklaus suggested at a recent FedEx Cup event that Woods was intimidated by McIlroy, leading McIlroy to joke that Tiger’s new name for him was “The Intimidator”.
Only time will tell if Woods’ hunt for the majors continues to slow and McIlroy’s success stands to last the test of time, but it’s undeniable golf fans have the newest face of the game in McIlroy.
