Cherington has his man: John Farrell to become next Sox manager
The Red Sox have their man. It was a quick search this time around, but Ben Cherington finally has his manager.
The news was first reported by Comcast Sportsnet’s Sean McAdam via Twitter late Saturday night. While the details weren’t ready, he reported that the Sox had signed Farrell to a multi-year deal and that the official announcement would soon follow.
Boston will be sending a player to the Toronto Blue Jays for compensation as well as receive a player. This will likely all be announced with Farrell’s contract details and compensation within a few days. Buzz on Twitter suggests the player is shortstop Mike Aviles as Alex Speier of WEEI reported Saturday night.
Farrell has been the Blue Jays’ manager for two seasons, but was the Red Sox pitching coach from 2006-2010 before he shipped out to Canada. While in Toronto, Farrell had a 154-170 record.
Full player and team reactions likely won’t come out until the official announcement is made, but Jon Lester took to Twitter to voice his opinion on the team’s new manager. Farrell was instrumental in Lester’s development during his time as pitching coach.
