Friars keep record-breaking win just out of reach for York, Eagles
On Friday night, just 10 seconds were all that separated Jerry York from breaking the record for most wins by a college hockey coach when his Eagles traveled to Providence, R.I. to face the Providence College Friars.
After tying the record with 924 wins last weekend in a home-and-home series split with Boston University, it was all but in the books that Hockey East’s fourth-ranked PC would serve as BC’s stepping stone to give their coach the record – but the Friars apparently took issue with that notion.
The Eagles carried a 3-2 lead late into the third period thanks to one goal from Johnny Gaudreau and two from Michael Matheson. The Friars fought back with goals from Derek Army and Noel Acciari to keep the game tight, and Providence goaltender Jon Gillies kept his team in it, but it was Nick Saracino who said, “Not tonight” to York and the Eagles with a game-tying goal with just 10.5 seconds left on the clock – leaving York still searching for win No. 925.
York will have to wait a few weeks for the record-breaking celebrations, as the Eagles don’t take the ice again until Dec. 29, after the players have finished their final exams and holiday festivities.
They’ll play a struggling University of Alabama–Huntsville team which is 1-12-1 on the season. Don’t break out the confetti, but it’s nearly a best bet York will see No. 925 come Dec. 29.
