Paterno statue reportedly will be taken down
After much debate in the sports world regarding the late Joe Paterno‘s statue outside Beaver Stadium at Penn State University, it appears a decision has been made. According to a report from NESN, the statue of the school’s former football coach will be removed this weekend.
The report comes following a tweet Friday morning by Kimberly Jones of the NFL Network who tweeted, “Am told Penn State plans to take down the Paterno statue this weekend.”
Bonnie Bernstein also tweeted regarding the statue, writing, “Source: Penn State Board of Trustees voted on a conference call last night to take down Joe Paterno statue. Will happen this wknd.”
Calls for the removal of the statue came following the release of the Freeh report July 12, in which former FBI director Louis Freeh and his staff independently investigated the scandal and found that “the most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized.”
Nike announced it would change the name of its childcare center the day the Freeh report was released.
