MLB Hats, Big Papi’s ‘Boston Strong’ Bats to Benefit Memorial Day Charity

This Memorial Day will be especially meaningful for the city of Boston and beyond. After the Boston bombings on Patriot’s Day just over a month ago, a special sense of patriotism has rung from the North End to Kenmore Square. On Memorial Day, when the country pauses to recognize the servicemen and women who keep the country safe, victims of the marathon bombings will also likely be on the minds of Bostonians.

The Red Sox will honor both veterans and marathon victims on Memorial Day. In a tradition dating back to 2008, the Red Sox (and Major League Baseball teams across the country) wear distinctive caps for Memorial Day. Fans can join in with their favorite team in supporting veterans by buying this year’s edition of the special hat, which will feature a authentic digital military camouflage with the team’s logo in front.

The hats will proceed the Welcome Back Veterans Fund and can be purchased at MLB.com, neweracap.com and various clubhouse stores.

For another way to support others on Memorial Day, follow the lead of Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, who expressed his love for the city of Boston in his emotional and colorful pregame speech after the capture of the surviving bombing suspect. Ortiz reached out to a partner at Marucci Sports and has created bats to help raise money for those affected by the Boston Marathon tragedy by using the words Ortiz shared that day.

All of Boston will be thinking of it and once again David Ortiz is saying it. The bats will be inscribed with your choice of Ortiz quote, either “This is our (f—ing) city” or “Nobody’s going to dictate our freedom”. Individual bats will be sold for $125 each, and bats with a personalized Big Papi signature are available for $500. All of the net proceeds from the sales of those bats will go to the OneFund or other victims of the bombings.
