10-year-old golf phenom shocks the world
The first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions a professional golf tournament is probably not a 10-year-old girl. The U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship this summer will change that.
There is no doubt that many sports are becoming a young man (or woman’s) game, especially golf, and despite the fact that the current spotlight may be on 42-year-old Ernie Els after he won the British Open this past weekend, Latanna Stone is about to steal his thunder.
While other fifth-grade girls are worrying about what outfit to wear to their summer barbecue, Stone is preparing herself for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in August. According to her website, Stone started golfing at age 2 and fell in love with the sport. The young girl shocked the world this summer after shooting a 70 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier. Stone’s score was the best of the event, and she beat out over 60 other girls to win the event. Stone is the youngest golfer by two years to ever qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.
This is not some fluke—the 10-year-old already has some 100 career wins in junior tournaments already, and she does not plan on stopping. At age 9, Stone boasted her plans to be the No. 1 golfer in the world someday. The home-schooled Florida native is certainly not straying from her golf dreams this summer.
