Tedy Bruschi in two different Halls of Fame
Former Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi had a busy month. On May 7th, he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Desert Swarm defense at the University of Arizona. Two weeks later, New England Patriots fans voted him as the 2013 Patriots Hall of Fame inductee. Bruschi joins WR Troy Brown and QB Drew Bledsoe as the only players to be voted to the Hall in their first year of eligibility.
Francona returns to Fenway
A familiar face in an unfamiliar uniform returned to Fenway Park this past weekend. Terry Francona, former Boston Red Sox manager, returned to Boston for the first time when his new club, the Cleveland Indians, came to town for a four-game series. The Red Sox prepared a video montage of Francona highlights, which the team played during the middle of the first inning of Thursday’s game. The sentiment didn’t last long as the Indians routed the Red Sox 12-3. The Sox would get the last laugh as they took the next three games, including scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday for a dramatic walk-off 6-5 win.
Buchholz recognized for hot start
Clay Buchholz was named AL Pitcher of the Month for April. After his May 2nd win against the Toronto Blue Jays, he compiled a 6-0 record with a 1.01 ERA. As is natural in baseball, when a player gets hot the naysayers come out. Blue Jays analysts Dirk Hayhurst and Jack Morris accused Buchholz of throwing spitballs (an illegal pitch). Red Sox analyst Dennis Eckersly responded to the allegations, saying Morris was “clueless” and “looking for attention” regarding the whole situation.
Revolution acquire big-name player
The New England Revolution were having offensive struggles in its 2013 campaign, producing four goals through eight games. They made a big trade to acquire former New York Red Bulls Academy product and Chivas USA forward Juan Agudelo. Agudelo had two goals and assist in six appearances with Chivas. Since the trade, the Revs lost 2-1 to Real Salt Lake, drew 1-1 against the New York Red Bulls and posted consecutive 2-0 shutouts against the Houston Dynamo and Toronto FC.
Bruins pull off comeback for the ages
In a town of historic comebacks, the Boston Bruins added one of their own to the record books. In Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Bs were down 4-1 with 15 minutes left in the game. What happened next has never been done in NHL history. Nathan Horton closed the gap to 4-2 with his goal 10:43 left in the game. Boston pulled goalie Tuukka Rask for an extra attacker and Milan Lucic scored with 1:22 left. Alternate Captain Patrice Bergeron became the hero when, again with the extra attacker, he fired home the game-tying goal with 50 seconds remaining in regulation. Bergeron wasn’t finished, he put in the game winning goal 6:05 into the overtime period, sending the Maple Leafs back to Toronto.
