A New Style for Gillette: NFL Style Lounge

Published On October 5, 2014 | By Shanda Foster

For years the game of football has been geared solely to men. Generation after generation, we women would watch as they congregated in our living rooms, screaming at the television, while dozens of macho beer and razor commercials played over the screen. I became a fan of the game at a mere 11 years old and never understood where the female fans were. Where were they? Back then, they watched but they were silent. I remember my mother and other wives being in the kitchen on Super Bowl Sunday. Now, don’t get me wrong, they were big fans of the game as well but there were no commercials for eye cream or the latest cookware and God forbid they showed any “Man Candy” for us. “When will the female fan get a little acknowledgement?”, I thought. Now over 20 years later (you do the math), in 2014, where the female sports fan makes up a cool 49% they’re finally getting it right and who better to be a leader in the trend then the NFL themselves with their Style Lounge.

The NFL Style Lounge is something for the ladies, which incorporates football and chic style at a stadium near you. The 3 year old pop-up shop showcased the latest in female NFL fashion ranging from jersey’s to sexy off-the-shoulder tops to little girls’ clothing. I had the chance to stop by the Style Lounge at Gillette Stadium and it was fantastic. I arrived at the Style Lounge Tent and followed up the red carpet. There, I was greeted by the Patriots Cheerleaders and a couple of styled mannequins showcasing some trendy Pats gear. Inside Mimosas and bagels were being served, while a DJ was spinning the latest music. The further inside I went, the more it looked like a sports diva’s dream. There were countless styles of Patriots clothing in an array of colors. The back wall was decorated with little girls’ Patriots clothing, accessories and trinkets.

I had gotten there just in time to see a couple of my favorite Patriot wives walk the runway. Both Bianca Wilfork and Cee Cee Chung were in attendance and slayed the catwalk in some of this years most popular gear, including the Passblock Sweater (which is to die for). Also in the house was celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch to style the lovely ladies. One of the things that stood out the most was how pleasant the staff was. They seemed so happy to be there and eager to help. I was immediately asked if I was interested in having a complimentary manicure or my make-up done. That was it. All I could think was, “I’m never leaving this place”.

The more I walked around, I saw cool videos playing on the television monitors, which showcased singer Jordin Sparks, actress Dania Ramirez and a host of other celebrities wearing NFL clothing. I poked around until I found out that they were all brand ambassadors of NFL Women’s Apparel.  Over 20 women are involved in this years campaign featuring “Together We Make Football”  to boast their love for the game.

I applaud the NFL for giving the female fan something to look forward to year after year.
The Style Lounges are still going on throughout the NFL season. Find one near you and take advantage if you get a chance. The more women we get to come out might just pave the way for even more events for us ladies.
